Statement of Senator Richard Gordon on Presidential Aspirations

Press ReleaseAugust 6, 2007

Statement of Senator Richard Gordon on Presidential Aspirations

Lest I be accused of starting the 2010 presidential campaign this early, I want to clarify what I said in my interview over dzBB last Sunday and which the Philippine Star, Malaya, Daily Tribune and Abante quite alertly reported on in its issue today.

I made no declaration about my candidacy in 2010; I only responded to questions fielded to me about the possibility of my running for the highest office within the gift of our people.
I said I would be lying if I did not admit to being interested in the office. I have heard for years the appeals of many who were urging me to run, and their whispers have been louder of late.
I fully respect the decisions of others who have already announced or hinted at their running for the Presidency. I wish them well.

With respect to party alignments, there are some whose strategy is to anchor their bids on the revival of the old political parties. In my case, if and when I run for President, I will look not to the past but to the future.

I will try to mold a popular party coalition for national modernization and renewal from the many new parties that have emerged over the past decade. I want to address the hopes of all those who want to make the Philippines a better place and a more progressive nation.

But that said, I want to emphasize that my priorities now are my work in the Senate, the Philippine Red Cross, and the various advocacies that I support. In the Senate, many issues and problems of great national import await the deliberation and decision of our senators. I too feel the weight of this responsibility, and I will put the greater part of my time to filling it. All talk about the future must yield to the needs of the present.

If only the Filipino people would stop with celebrity politics, the Philippines would have been better off. I have been a supporter of Senator Richard Gordon ever since his days as Olongapo mayor, where i saw first hand how he has made that city a very progressive one. He has one of the most brilliant and progressive minds among the presidentiables for 2010. Think of this... Bong Revilla vs. Richard Gordon for president? Namputsa, no wonder we're not going anywhere!! Well, we get what we deserve, right? I hope this will start a snowball for his bid for 2010. If there is any way to help out, i should do it by standing behind this man Richard Gordon, as he is the most capable... Better yet, how about a Gordon-Bayani Fernando tandem? Wow, aangat tayo nyan!! .. Wishful thinking.. but hey, we all are entitled to it.

Let's support Richard Gordon for President. He's the man right for the job. He has the common denominator of the great leaders of other countries i.e visionay. Gordon is a visionary. He should be the next President for 2010. I'd like Gordon - Escudero tandem in 2010. Escudero for he's young and full of idealism.

Revilla, Estrada, Lapid et.al should confined themselves in the movie industry. Ni hindi nga nila malinis ang piracy sa pinas tapos gusto pa maging presidente or vice president. No way. mga tanga lang ang boboto sa kanila.

I agree that Gordon is really a great politician. Even in his days in SBMA are really good. yet, we still can't say that he will be a good president. People will always be not contented with what we have.

I salute you senator for your effort to combat corruption and nail all the crook. I wish you will be the 2010 president & we will support you. All the Filipino in Los Angeles I know agree you're the only senator we can trust. I still remember your help to the people of Cabanatuan during the '91earthquake where you brought all the crew of U S bases & you set aside politics. Build more "bilibid prison" for corrupt government officials. Thank you. Pinoy from Anaheim

just read on gmanews.tv that gordon might probably run for the highest post of the land, this is good news not only for me but for those filipinos that still believes that this country can still be the "phoenix"...rise from the ashes and be the firebird!!!

i got my first glimpse of mr. gordon during the killer quake in the 90's, he was still the sbma chairman, i said to myself i liked this guy, now that he might run for the presidency i really hope that we filipinos will vote for him

I am personally from Olongapo. I'm not sure if any of you here are from that city. All I can say is that you can see what Gordon has done to that city right from the start. He was able to get the entire city work hard not just for their families but also for the entire city. I believe that if Gordon can do that in one city he can do it for the entire nation.

I do agree that we must celebrity politics and we must start that now. People who are already in a government position trying to get Pacquiao's attention must stop. They should understand that politics is different from any kind of sport and entertainment.

What about the poll I read a week ago showing the possibility that ERAP might run for president again! That's not right considering what the country has been during his administration.

The Filipino community needs a president who is not just a president but also a leader who is not afraid of corruption. Gordon is a good candidate because of how he keeps his integrity as a clean and effective politician.

If there's one person who can make sampal sa buong Philippines to wake up, that would be Gordon. Go Blue!!!

So nice to read all comments are positive and looking forward for a good future. It is my first time to write a comment which is not my habit. I believe that Gordon can make a positive change for our country. I personally envy Singapore for being highly organized and clean country in terms of politics and knowing Philippines once before the #1 richest country in Asia.

Sir Gordon I will support you all the way! Good luck! Aim High Philippines!

Hi to all,

Sa akin, si Sen. Richard Gordon ang pinaka the best na maging Pangulo ng Pilipinas. Hindi lang sya magaling sa salita kundi sa gawa.

Im originally from Olongapo, and then I moved here in America couple of years ago..
Kahit san ka tumingin, makakakita ka ng signs na nagsasabing "bawal ang tamad sa olongapo", "bawal magtapon ng basura dito", "what our country need is not change in men, but change in men". With these, discipline of oneself is one of the greatest factor to make a change.
and in addition po, kaya malaki ang galit ni erap kay gordon eh dahil nung nasa pwesto pa si gordon as chairman of sbma, then bumisita si erap nung senator pa xa, (w/c is back in 1991 ata)erap was so undisciplined and unrespectful to our city na tinapon nya na lang yung sigarilyo nya kung saan saan, but Gordon told to erap to pick up his cigar and throw it at trashcan.

Dick GORDON/Kiko PANGILINAN

An INDEPENDENT TICKET for a NEW PHILIPPINES

This can be a very good team para sa Bagumbayang PILIPINAS.

If they make this tandem a reality and make a roadmap to victory, their RATINGS can soar. They should focus on their records, the policy plans for the economy, peace and security, poverty alleviation, corruption elimination, their brand of leadership, their vision. Never mind not having a Senatorial slate. Just GORDON/PANGILINAN Ticket para REFORM TICKET na, INDEPENDENT TICKET pa. Wala ng sayaw sayaw at kanta kanta... deretso sa plataporma. I bet di sila magmumukhang TRAPO, at matatalo nila sina ROXAS, VILLAR at ESCUDERO

Frankly I do not know him personally, but his accomplishments speak well of him compare to other presidentiables. This man (Gordon) has been my choice for president even before Erap and GMA. I already started campaigning and telling people about his accomplishments and his advantage to other candidates. How about start a P20 pesos contribution for "Gordon for President? I was able to watch the leadership forum at ANC and to me Mr. Richard Gordon made the most sense and seemed most sincere. He was the only one who was able to convey to me a clear vision of what he wants for our nation and a concrete means of how to achieve it. Many hands do make light work, and a lot of work has to be done to get our country back on track. I agree that we have to regain our pride as a people and unleash all our talents and efforts for the good of all. Should Mr. Gordon push through with his candidacy, I pledge my support for him. I believe that the Filipino people have the capacity to choose its leaders with their conscience and consciousness and to rise above the hypes, fads and popularity races. I want my homeland to be the best place for my children to grow and prosper. I hope Mr. Gordon pushes through with his candidacy. Mabuhay ang Pilipinas!

Sa lahat nang kumakandidato, wala talaga akong mapiling deserving to preside our country other than Senator Richard Gordon. First of all the reason why he deserve to be one because He's the only one that represent our country amongst other countries and gained the victory to win one of our land a part of the world of wonders!....nung tourism pa lang siya, if i'm not mistaken!...He also presided Ologapo City at tignan nyo naman- The cleanest city of all!...AIM HIGH!...Ika nga!!!.....At saka kung iisa-isahin natin ang mga presidentiables...Erap (I wud say, pls. people NO MORE!)...Noli De Castro ( Excuse me, WhO???)...Escudero (numero unang aktibista toh at walang ginawa kung hindi rumampa sa daan kalabanin ang lahat to expose himself for the next candidacy)...Noynoy Aquino (ok!..no offense pero he seemed to be not a good one, he's just taking advantage of the sympathies of people to her late mother)...Manny Villar (ok!...money isn't the thing here, it's the excellency in leadership)...I wish people know better that being played by these politicians....For me, the only deserving one is YOU! Senator Richard Gordon!!!...

No other presidentiable can equal what Richard Gordon has already done for the Philippines. He is a visionary leader. He is like Lee Kuan Yew who made Singapore one of the best in Asia. Noynoy is a good manager but never a leader who can effect change in people. Senator Gordon said, "The presidency should be earned not inherited." Let's spread the word about Richard Gordon. Simply posting all his accomplishments in your websites, and other media tools would make a big difference. The time is NOW. Thank you.

I want to see Dick Gordon to be the next president of the Philippines in 2010. I lived in the states and I am still a true
Filipino. It just hurt me so bad to see the economic growth of the country to be hampered by dirty and corrupt politicians. Filipinos should stop voting for celebrity aspiring president. I have read and seen your result when you are a mayor in olongapo. If you are a true full blooded Filipino and want to serve your country, Please run for president in 2010. To all the presidential hopeful, you are the only qualified goverment officials that can lead the country from poverty and growth. Help us cure the old saying about the Philippines as "The Old Sick Man of Asia".

Sir Dick,

You are the best leader this country needs. I have seen with my very own eyes how Olongapo and SBMA have become a cradle of volunteerism and heroism. The discipline that you instilled among us Filipinos of Olongapo and the good governance you have shown not only to the people of this country but other countries as well will never be forgotten.
I can see in you a vision and hope.
You have transformed ordinary citizens into modern-day heroes.
I salute you and give you the highest honor an ordinary citizen could give.

Good luck and God bless. AIM HIGH PHILIPPINES

Sen. Gordon has proven his great leadership and administrative capability on many occasions like the strong earthquake in the late 80s, and when the Americans left Subic. We were able to visit Subic two months after the Americans left and we saw how all the properties and assets were kept INTACT (every nuts and bolts were properly accounted for with labels) by the volunteers under Gordon's leadership. We need good adminstrators rather than national politcians to run this country WELL and GOOD. Mabuhay Gordon! Keep on the fight and the good crusade. God bless you and your loved ones. Mabuhay Philippines!

Im really impressed with Mr. Gordon in the Harapan Presidential forum. I just turned 18 which made me a first time voter for 2010. I really wanted Bayani Fernando for president. but unfortunately the admi. chose Gibo. since then i lose interest in voting. i don't like any of the presidential candidates. When i watched the Harapan forum i realized why my dad became a big fan of Mr. Gordon. HIS ANSWERS ARE THE ONLY STATEMENTS I UNDERSTAND AMONG THE CANDIDATES. All of them use jargon words which made their answers very "mabulaklak"! Mr. Gordon's answers were understandable, straight and simple. that's what Filipino especially the youth, needs. were not all political science or law students here. too much of jargon words made a speech very boring. there must be a connection. and i agree with him that he will not be focusing too much interrogating pgma. it really gets on my nerves when i see politicians debating and fighting for nonsense. while there are other more important issues and problems awaiting to be solve. I hope that Mr. Gordon and Mr. Bayani would really imposed discipline to Filipinos. I love being a Filipino but i get embarrassed with my fellow citizens who are undisciplined. i hope we'll get close with the japanese. at least with them being clean and disciplined. Good luck to Gordon-Bayani Tandem. i really wish they'll get the positions.

I want to volunteer for their campaign. Please let me know how to be of help...although I've started telling about them to my officemates, friends and churchmates.

What our country's need is a change in men and only Gordon-BF have the credibility and capability to enable filipinos to have this change.

Mr. Richard Gordon is a hands on executive who is very passionate about what he does. I have observed this first hand as a Filipino American US Navy personnel stationed in Subic Naval Base during and after the Pinatubo eruption. He is tough and reasonable as Mayor and later an administrator of SBMA. He rebuked Joseph Estrada's erap politics approach and they have a falling out which leads to Gordon's ouster as SBMA leader when Estrada became president. Gordon moved on from that and run for Senate despite being a dark horse and surprisingly won. I truly believe that a personality like Richard Gordon is what the seemingly un-governable country like the Philippines is in dire need of. I support the Richard Gordon for President candidacy. Talk is cheap but I would like to be able to help in my humble capacity, hopefully for this man to be the next President of the Philippines. Is there a mechanism in place for Gordons candidacy for monetary contributions, because he needs lots of money to go up against the wannabe presidents, that we all know is bank rolled by greedy special interest group and is going to be business as usual after the elections, again at the expense of the Filipino people?

Being from Bataan, I and my family frequently went to Olongapo and SBMA, after the Americans left the US bases in Subic. And we were amazed by the law & order strictly implemented and followed there. My first impression then was "parang wala ka sa Pilipinas". Even the maketplace was very orderly and clean. Inside SBMA, you will be compelled to follow the strict traffic rules, not by fear of the stiff fines and penalties, but by the magnetism of cooperation inspired by a good administrator and leader - that is Gordon. I can't help but feel the sheer awe and admiration that this kind of discipline is possible in the Philippines.
